Come ripartiremo? / How are we going to restart?

After the inebriation from “Bella ciao” on 25 April, we are getting ready for the next one from “El pueblo unido jamás será vencido” on the 1st of May.
In the meantime, we are coping with the problems caused by COVID-19 in the lives of all of us, and particularly tourism. We were surprised by the decision to reopen restaurants, presumably, from the first of June, a prescription that greatly impacts on the summer season. But even more than this, our mood is maybe influenced by the lack of certainties, partly due to the gaps in the provisions just issued, and partly to the existing objective difficulties, as is shown by the return of the contagion in Germany, after a less than timely reopening.
Recent history, such as the twin tower attack or the 2007 economic crisis, teaches us that after a period of difficulty we can rapidly react and become even stronger than before, and we hope this is going to happen again. But, in the meantime, we have to cope with a daily reality of big and small problems, which at the moment find no answers from either politics or history, as there are no previous experiences with a similar virus.
We all want to be more optimistic, but we would like to have some certainties, or at least more concrete indications as to how to plan our phase 2 operatively. The problems for hospitality are many and challenging, regarding the physical arrangement of facilities, the organisation of safety on the job, the staffing, which was determined at the beginning of the year, and now needs to be completely revised. Will the bookings to accept be 50%, 70% or 100% of capacity? A number of questions that involve important choices, possibly critical for this year 2020.
The financial issues are not of secondary importance, despite the tourbillon of figures boasted by our political rulers, sometimes with unwitting humoristic effects, like Premier Conte, when, talking about granting liquidity to the production system, asked the banks for “an act of love”. Knowing what banks are like, maybe it was a different movie….
