Buona Pasqua!

Each day has its burdens!

Spring is the season when tourist facilities experience the more severe difficulties in the management of human resources. Working in close contact with tourist enterprises, I am bound to be aware of their problems (sometimes by listening to the complaints of exasperated people), and the main reason for being upset is when the staff has just been formed, and immediately it falls apart because of last-minute defections. Being characterised by specialist roles and – often – by a seasonal nature, tourist businesses require a great amount of attention and commitment in the choice of a well-balanced staff.
Well, these few lines are intended as a consolation, by showing that other sectors (in this case, publishing) are affected by similar problems.
Job in Tourism has the direct management of its editing, websites, marketing and development, while the magazine pagination, printing, circulation and the management of subscriptions are the competence of Class Editori. Consequently, the number of staff working in our office is limited: there used to be six resources until the end of 2005, and there are eight presently. But the two new employees – due to recruiting, defections, and re-recruiting – are going to be effective only between 18th April and 2nd May. Of the other staff members, the chief editor mainly works from home (so we are down to 5), a person has been absent for quite some time (down to 4), another person called me at home on Sunday at eleven o’clock in the night to inform me that he absolutely had to go back to his home in Puglia for serious reasons (down to 3). Our young webmaster had to take time off in order to take a couple of examinations at the Bocconi University (only 2 left); one day I had to go to Varese, where our business consultant had called the general meeting for the approval of the annual accounts (only 1 left); so I had to ask the only person who was still available (the accountant) to please come to the office from the morning (normal hours would have been only in the afternoon) otherwise nobody would have been there to answer the phone.
Of course, I know, it is just a phase, things will change.
From the Gospel according to Matthew: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”. So… let it be!
Happy Easter!
