Remembrance of a father

I was conversing with Fiammetta Ariani, in the office of Ariani & Partners and, as often happens, the topic had drifted from business to “life”.
A book was lying on the table, with a grey cover portraying the face of a man. Feeling curious about it, I asked her who it was, and she told me it was her father. Avvocato Lamberto Ariani, who passed away at the turn of the new millennium, had also been active in the field of tourism, with initiatives that were ahead of their time. His daughter Fiammetta, with her brother, have thought of compiling a book by collecting family memories, public appearances, photographs which have the flavour of old times and repropose his – and a great part of our – history: the Russian front, the caravan with his family when he – a forerunner of modern times – founded the Italian Camping Federation, the transformation of Villa Vittoria into the Florence Congress Centre where he was the President, the Mugello motor-racing track as C.S.A.I. Italian Automobile Sports Commissioner; international meetings in his capacity as Italcongressi President.
She gave me a copy of the book, prefaced by the last article he wrote for a Florence periodical, wherefrom I am proposing an abstract (even though he turned out not to be a good prophet): “And now we have to wonder – at the dawn of the third millennium – what will be the behaviours, the efforts and successes? First of all, we need to remove the dust off “values” such as courage, family, job (with the objective difficulty to achieve one), honour, the community called homeland, sense of duty, selflessness, generosity, discipline, authority, sense of religiosity, professionalism, solidarity, a strong will of international cooperation; all of them the pillars of any community, essential to the cohesion of today’s civil society. And hope, the indestructible magnet of the future, without which nothing can be built; the young …….. them we must trust, against any indifference, uncertainty or pessimism, because tomorrow belongs to them. The year zero has opened up a time of renewal”.
A book with a simple structure, made up of memories, reminiscences, tender feelings. Maybe because we are in autumn – as a time of the year and a season of life – we spontaneously wonder how many among us will have the fortune to be remembered with such intensity.
