Non facciamoci del male…. | Let’s not hurt ourselves….

Di Antonio Caneva, 4 Settembre 2020

E rieccoci…..

We spent a month eating canederli, malureddus, pasta alla Norma or piadinas, and now, like crocodiles, we are busy reflecting on the calories that landed on our waistlines, and making plans for the coming future.
What happened during the month of August? Leisure tourism recovered fairly well, to the detriment of art cities and business tourism. In a strive toward normal living, however, there has also been a display of careless behaviour, particularly unreasonable on the part of those who would have an economic (as well as social) interest in keeping the pandemic under control.
A few examples:
From the newspaper Il Dolomiti: “The director of the Alta Badia Tourist Association of Badia has resigned from office, after being reported for failure to comply with health regulations in recent days. The 24-year old manager, who had tested positive to Covid-19, despite being subject to quarantine, had gone to work, met friends and participated in a graduation party in a mountain refuge in Corvara /…/ A total number of 34 citizens are currently subject to home isolation while awaiting the results of tampon tests to assess the possible spread of the coronavirus /…/ Many people who had planned to spend their holidays in Val Badia have decided to cancel their bookings”.

I spent a week in Bormio, a nice village in the Valtellina, and stayed at a very pleasant hotel, except that I witnessed something that sounds incredible in this period. Breakfast was served from a buffet without any physical distance requirements, unlike it is generally done, and the guests helped themselves directly from the table, sometimes even without wearing a mask.

A too well-known story is that of the Billionaire club in Porto Cervo which became a breeding ground for infection, also affecting its owner Flavio Briatore who was hospitalized at San Raffaele in Milan, but before being found infected had lashed out against the mayor of Arzachena, guilty, in his opinion, of imposing unjustified constraints. The mayor, Roberto Ragnedda, replied with a withering remark: “As I listened to Briatore I thought it was comedian Crozza’s imitation!”.

What can we say, if even those who are directly concerned do not pay attention to their own and other people’s health, it will be hard to come out of it. But I am certain that the majority of the people involved are alert and diligent, and this is not just a wish, it is direct knowledge from my own observations. In this industry, people are careful and conscientious. All we can do now is wait for the end of the nightmare.
