E così siamo arrivati all’ultimo numero dell’anno; un anno cominciato bene, che sta finendo come sappiamo.
Le ultime misure sanitarie ed economiche sono state dirompenti; programmi personali e di lavoro, attese di sviluppo, vanificati dalla necessità di mettere in sicurezza il Paese. Mi sono preso la briga di una breve ricerca su Internet ed ho rilevato che gli oltre sessantamila deceduti per Covid rappresentano per numero la popolazione di numerose importanti città, addirittura capoluoghi di provincia, quali ad esempio L’Aquila, Cosenza, Caltanissetta; come se all’improvviso una di queste località fosse stata spazzata via. Un brivido solo a ripensarci.
In questo periodo ognuno sta soffrendo per qualcosa, dolori grandi o piccoli; contrarietà e problemi ed in questo stato talvolta emergono gli aspetti peggiori delle persone, che hanno la giustificazione di sentirsi sole, indifese, senza gli schermi che il vivere civile crea. Una nuova realtà alla quale non tutti sono riusciti ad adeguarsi.
Ormai però, con l’arrivo dei vaccini, dovremmo essere vicini alla fine di questo lungo periodo e ci domandiamo se riusciremo a recuperare, e se sì in quanto tempo, a tornare a vivere la vita precedente. Questa è una bella domanda alla quale ragionevolmente nessuno può dare una risposta, ma dobbiamo necessariamente porcela. La storia insegna che si tende a rimuovere le cose peggiori, a guardare avanti cercando di superare le difficoltà, alla ricerca di un nuovo equilibrio. Probabilmente sarà così anche in questa occasione, finiremo per dimenticarci di questo momento e fra qualche anno lo ricorderemo solo quando lo racconteremo a chi continuerà dopo di noi, naturalmente facendoci guardare con una nota di scetticismo….
L’anno tra poco finirà e non ci resta che attendere quello nuovo, brindando, prudentemente distanziati, nella consapevolezza che dobbiamo rimetterci in moto per recuperare quanto lasciato per strada in termini di sicurezza, tranquillità e coesione sociale. Il turismo ha sofferto fortemente ma ha anche le risorse per ripartire, la voglia di superare questo periodo ne sarà il motore e già le aziende che cominciano a cercare il personale per la prossima stagione estiva ne sono la testimonianza. Un anno nuovo per metterci alle spalle tanti dolori.

We have come all the way to the last issue of the year: a year that started out fine, but is now ending as we well know.
The latest health and economic measures have been disruptive; personal plans, business plans and development expectations have been thwarted by the need to secure the country. I took pains to do a short internet search, and found that the over sixty thousand Covid victims in Italy are equal to the population number of several important towns, even province capitals, such as l’Aquila, Cosenza, Caltanisetta, for example. As if, suddenly, one of these towns had been swept away. You get shivers just thinking about it.
In this period, everyone is suffering because of something, small or big sorrows, frustrations and problems, and this is when the worst aspects of people come out, justified by the fact of feeling lonely, helpless, without the protection afforded by normal civilised living. A new reality to which not everybody has been able to adjust.
Now, however, with vaccines becoming available, we should be approaching the end of this long period, and we wonder whether we’ll be able to recoup and go back to life as before, and if so, how long it will take. It is an interesting question which nobody can reasonably have an answer for, but we do have to ask ourselves. History teaches that we tend to suppress the memory of bad things, and look ahead in the attempt to overcome difficulties and find a new balance. It will probably be so even this time around: we’ll end up forgetting this moment, and in a few years’ time we’ll only recall it in order to tell the people who come after us, obviously attracting some scepticism from our listeners….
The year is ending soon, and all we can do is wait for the new one, raising toasts, prudently distanced, in the awareness that we’ll have to make an effort to recover what we have lost along the way, in terms of safety, peace of mind and social cohesion. Tourism has been affected severely, but it also has the resources to start again. The desire to overcome this period will be its engine, and companies starting to recruit personnel for the next season is already proof of this. A new year, to put so many sorrows behind ourselves.
