La tovaglia rossa sul tavolo, le luci intermittenti sui rami di pino, la musica di White Christmas stridevano con lo spirito che permeava nell’aria e che si percepiva piuttosto osservando dalla finestra la strada grigia ricoperta dalle ultime foglie, il cielo dello stesso colore e i rari passanti che camminavano velocemente inseguendo i propri pensieri che dalle espressioni non dovevano essere allegri; un Natale come nessun altro precedente.
Ora siamo entrati nell’anno nuovo e, come al solito, ci domandiamo cosa ci aspetti; le note natalizie hanno lasciato il posto all’“Anno che verrà” di Lucio Dalla e seguendo questa canzone dovremmo essere ottimisti.
Ma, è ragionevole o piuttosto risponde al bisogno di serenità di cui necessitiamo dopo tanti mesi di difficoltà? Penso che a oggi nessuno sia in grado, in buona fede, di dare una risposta definitiva. Dico “in buona fede” perché in questi ultimi tempi siamo stati subissati da messaggi e previsioni che spesso, più che rispondere obiettivamente al bisogno di chiarezza, tendevano a supportare posizioni, non sempre onorevoli.
Siamo in possesso però di alcuni dati utili per una propria valutazione ed il principale di questi è l’arrivo del vaccino, già in via di somministrazione, cui presto seguiranno altri, rappresentando così la svolta per debellare la pandemia. Non sarà un periodo breve e il comparto del turismo / ristorazione, che è stato tra quelli più colpiti dalle scorse restrizioni, riesce con difficoltà ad accettare altri sacrifici. Il governo afferma che “non vuole lasciare indietro nessuno” ma, nei fatti, molti sono rimasti indietro, affrontando difficoltà via via crescenti. Ora si parla dell’istituzione di una fascia bianca che potrebbe essere il prodromo ad una maggiore apertura e un ritorno alla normalità.
Sono convinto che il Paese sia caricato come una molla, pronta a scattare appena si toglierà il fermo, ma per raggiungere risultati positivi bisognerà che la politica dia segnali forti e coerenti, già da subito utilizzando in maniera corretta il Recovery Fund. Sarà capace di farlo? È un’opportunità storica, come lo è stata la pandemia, ma dell’esito di questa occasione non potremo dare la colpa (o il merito) ad altri; saremo responsabili solo noi. Speriamo in bene….
The red tablecloth, the intermittent lights on the Christmas tree, the White Christmas music were somewhat clashing with the spirit permeating the air, even more clearly perceived when looking out of the window at the grey road scattered with the last dry leaves, the sky of the same colour, and the rare passers-by who walked briskly absorbed in their own thoughts, which were not happy thoughts, judging by their faces. A Christmas like no other before.
Now we are into the new year, and, as usual, we are wondering what is awaiting us. Christmas songs have made way to the year ahead, L’anno che verrà by Lucio Dalla, and if we heed this song’s words we should be optimistic.
But is this reasonable, or does it rather respond to a need for serenity after so many months of difficulty? Honestly, I think nobody today is in a position to find a final answer in good faith. I am saying “in good faith” because in the last few months we have been deluged with messages and forecasts which, rather than objectively responding to a need for clarity, were in fact aimed to support not always honourable partisan positions.
We are, however, in possession of some information that is useful for an assessment of our own, and the main fact is the arrival of vaccines, already being administered, with more doses to come soon, marking the turning point to defeat the pandemic. It will not take a short time, and the tourism and restaurant industry, which has been among the hardest hit by Covid restrictions, is poorly placed to accept more sacrifices. The Italian government stated they “will leave nobody behind”, but in real fact, many have been lagging behind in the face of increasing difficulties. Now there is talk of the creation of a ‘white zone’ which may prelude to more openings and a return to normality.
I am convinced that our country has been coiled up like a spring, ready to snap as soon as it is released, but in order to achieve positive results it will be necessary for our politicians to give strong and consistent signals, starting from now, by making good use of the EU Recovery Fund. Will they be able to do so? This is a historic opportunity, like the pandemic has been, but we won’t be able to blame (or credit) anybody else for its outcome except ourselves. Let’s hope for the best!
