The reasons for a meeting

When these lines are published, the meeting organised by Job in Tourism on the 23rd will have taken place, and I hope it will have provided its participants with some elements for reflection.
The theme of the meeting – “Certification, technology and safety of hotel facilities” – is certain to be of interest, but it would have been possible to identify a great number of topics just as significant and current; it is not the content of the meeting I wish to discuss here, but rather the reasons that motivated us to start the new year by organising an opportunity for exchanging opinions.
Underlying the decision to hold a meeting, was the conviction that few activities like those of the hospitality industry require skills in an extraordinarily wide range of disciplines, which need to be adequately mastered not to cause serious repercussions for the business as well as for the owners’ personal liability.
It is certainly not the size of an establishment that determines the need for constant updating. The difference between large and small businesses is that within larger structures, responsibilities are divided among a greater number of people, who can have a deeper knowledge of their specific tasks; but in the end all responsibilities are the same, and they all converge onto the person in charge of the business, whether it is the owner or the manager.
I must admit I am curious to see who will in fact participate in the meeting. At the moment, the majority of registrations have been made by students or scholars of the tourist disciplines, almost as if professionals and business operators had an attitude of superiority towards topics they already know everything about. Could that be possible?
Maybe next Thursday I will have changed my mind, and among the participants there will be a majority of professionals who will have taken away some of their valuable time from the many commitments of a working day, in order to exchange opinions on current issues that – like many others – are intimately connected to their work.
