Il campionato d’Europa / The European Championship

Speriamo in bene.

Recently, I was talking with Ivan Artolli, the managing director of the iconic Hotel de Paris in Montecarlo, and he reminded me of a Venetian saying: ” For a pandemic to end, you need one Christmas and two Easters”. Might it be that Venetians are right, in which case we are now fine?
A journalist asked Mario Draghi what he thought about the Minister of Tourism’s prediction, according to which the summer holiday bookings should be starting soon, and the answer was: “I agree with him, we can start booking holidays. If I could afford going on holiday, I would do so myself”.
In line with what our Prime Minister said, there are signs of improvement coming from many sources, even though, as never before, there is increased discomfort due to a situation that has gone on far too long not to cause anxiety in the population. Now we have come to the point of street battles, which is certainly not a positive sign; situations of understandable distress are compounded by the doings of professional trouble-makers who add fuel to the fire of protest. It’s all too easy to say that unrest only favours those factions that seek violence and disorder, but we need to consider the reasons of those who have been living in an economic nightmare for months. Last year, at the beginning of the pandemic, with the country under a severe lockdown, we were almost living an epic time, with flags displayed and musicians playing from balconies, and a common social feeling. As it became progressively clearer that we would not be able to recover, except last year for a couple of summer months, all the criticalities of a fragile country came to the fore, with a double standard of citizens, those who have a guaranteed income and those who have to earn their bread daily and no longer have a daily activity.
Unfortunately, the virus has no respect for anybody, but we do place hope in the new phase of the vaccination campaign. It’s recent news that the European soccer matches will be played in Italy, with stadiums open at 25% occupancy: a positive sign not only for soccer lovers (not the most important aspect) but mainly because it reflects a cautious easing of rigorous measures, and shows that the Government is prepared to go beyond ideology in order to assess concrete needs. Let’s hope for the best!
