Avevo un amico che, immancabilmente, quando voleva dare enfasi a un suo ragionamento, iniziava con la frase: “Quando ero a Hong Kong…”, ricordando così un’esperienza lavorativa nella ex colonia britannica, in un albergo della catena Forte, che gli aveva consentito di vivere in Cina per un anno.
Era l’inizio degli anni 70 e poter parlare di un continente a noi lontano rendeva vivo il racconto e faceva un po’ di invidia a chi lo ascoltava.
Una delle caratteristiche dell’industria dell’ospitalità è la possibilità che offre a chi opera nel settore di viaggiare e fare esperienze; circostanza ritenuta negativa da coloro che interpretano quest’attività con una visione impiegatizia, ma estremamente positiva e gratificante da chi ne ha una visione di ampio respiro.
Ci sono momenti in cui bisogna fare delle scelte per decidere che indirizzo dare al proprio futuro e, come spesso avviene, sono scelte non facili; talvolta bisogna rinunciare alla tranquillità di un’esistenza programmata, alla compagnia degli amici, a vicinanze affettive per andare incontro all’incognita di un lavoro in un paese lontano, alla necessità di integrarsi in culture diverse con diversi metodi di lavoro. Come contropartita però c’è l’opportunità di crescere professionalmente e culturalmente, di vivere esperienze non altrimenti condivisibili, di sentirsi, anche quando si torna in patria, cittadini del mondo.
Queste riflessioni mi sono nate spontanee nel pubblicare l’inserzione di Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts di Hong Kong, la più importante compagnia alberghiera di lusso dell’Asia, che cerca figure qualificate per i propri alberghi. Personale cerca pure la Crystal, compagnia di crociere che fa dell’eccellenza il proprio modo di operare, e pure altre società internazionali cercano professionalità italiane. Noi siamo lieti di essere in grado di proporre queste opportunità a chi ha aspirazioni di crescita e così porgere lo spunto, a chi ne ha vocazione, di poter infine affermare…quando ero a Hong Kong!
Work experiences around the world
I had a friend who would emphasise the viewpoints he expressed by invariably starting with the sentence “When I was in Hong Kong…”, thus referring to a job he had had in the former British colony, in a hotel of the Forte chain, which allowed him to live in China for a year.
That happened in the early Seventies, and having the chance to talk about a far-away continent had the effect to pepper up a story and to make listeners a little envious.
One of the characteristics of the hospitality industry is the opportunity workers are offered to travel and have new experiences – which is regarded as a negative thing by those who have a conservative approach to jobs, and as extremely positive and gratifying by those who have a broader vision.
There are times when a person needs to make choices for his or her future, and most times they are not easy choices; sometimes you have to sacrifice the tranquillity of a planned existence, the company of friends, and the closeness of your loved ones, to go towards the unknown of a job in a far-off country, the need to integrate in different cultures and different ways of working. By way of compensation, you have the opportunity to grow professionally and culturally, live experiences you would not otherwise have, and even after coming back to your country, live with the feeling that you are a citizen of the world,
These remarks occurred to me spontaneously on publishing the classified by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts of Hong Kong, the most important luxury hotel chain in Asia, which is seeking qualified personnel for its hotels. Also seeking personnel is Crystal, a cruising company with a policy of excellence, as well as other international companies looking for Italian staff. We are glad to have the possibility to present such opportunities to those who have the ambition to grow, providing a chance for motivated people some day to be able to say. “When I was in Hong Kong…”!
