Applications and replies

“I am submitting my application because I would like to move closer to my family in Milan.” Unfortunately, the advertisement indicated clearly that the position was to be in Rome.
“I am an ambitious young man, I have just completed the hotel management school and I would like to test myself against an important challenge”. Unfortunately, the advertised position was for an experienced general manager for an important hotel.
A Chef de Rang’s application for a chief receptionist position and, conversely, a receptionist’s application for a Food & Manager position.
These are just some examples of what often happens in the recruitment process.
The practice of sending CVs via email has greatly simplified application procedures, to the point that, rightly or wrongly, anybody feels entitled to submit an application with a click, with the result of clogging up the mailboxes.
When I was young, CVs were sent by mail, and involved a certain amount of personal effort: you had to write the letter, stamp the envelope, go to the post-box to mail it, and if you wanted to be sure of a reply, particularly in Switzerland, you enclosed a voucher for the value of the postage, which the hotel would exchange for a stamp at the post office, thus ensuring a reply.
Recently, a reader complained about companies not replying to applicants (he actually said that this behaviour is not correct), and I can understand the discomfort of waiting for a response to a job application; employment is so important that being out of a job can condition your life. Those who are not involved cannot be fully aware of how frustrating it may be to be waiting for a reply, whether positive or negative, and not to be contacted at all.
Unfortunately, the extreme ease in sending out CVs has made it hardly possible to reply to them all; applications are often received in the hundreds, even though, as I said, many of them are sent inappropriately.
This is the new reality; replying used to be the rule until recently, but it is no longer so. There is a new way of operating in all business sectors, as a result of IT development, which has made many behaviours obsolete; although reluctantly, we have to acknowledge this change.
